Knox Grammar School is one of the most progressive and prestigious private schools on the North Shore in Sydney. Pioneering numerous new advances in academics in many new projects, it is a leading institution in education reform. It is a school that creates a class of well-balanced gentlemen who are as much as sportsmen as they are scholars, whilst excelling in both fields. Knox Grammar School provides a great case study of how great leadership at the top of the school led by the Headmaster, Mr John Weeks, and the Dean of Studies, Mrs Karen Yager, has created a successful school.

Inter-School Initiatives:

Da Vinci Decathlon - The Da Vinci Decathlon is a Knox designed and pioneered academic competition which involves schools competing in teams of 8 in 10 academic subjects. The Decathlon is an exemplary example of Knox’s innovation in the education realm, with this activity allowing students to engage more fully with what they have learnt in the classroom and applying it outside of the classroom in a competitive environment. It involves schools from around Australia and the world on the state, national and in from all around the world and also at the national level in Australia and state level as well in NSW.

Global Writing Project - The Global Writing Project is a recent addition to Knox’s inter-school initiatives portfolio, involving students from all around the world. Students engage with other students by writing creative pieces. In general, this project helps in encouraging students to be more creative in their thinking. This has been pioneered by Mrs Karen Yager.

Values Exchange - Values Exchange is an activity that was begun by Professor David Seedhouse and has been carried on at Knox, primarily by Mr Andrew Weeding, Senior Academic Master for Stage 5. It is a non-competitive ethical and moral forum that encourages students to think about philosophical issues. It is again an example of education innovation, as these higher-order tasks are rarely given to students to engage in and discuss with other students.

Positive Psychology:

Positive Psychology is a major program that has been recently introduced into Knox. It aims to create a more positive learning environment for students, which enables them to better explore their academic success. Positive Psychology makes students much more happy and improves their mental health, which has a direct positive impact on their academic performance. For instance, the school has begun reducing the influence of its disciplinary procedures and instead focusing on the positive side of communications to those that would normally require discipline.

Development Projects:

Senior School - the development projects which have occurred in the past ten or so years at the Senior School include the building of the Great Hall and Aquatic Centre, the Knox Boarding Centre and the KG Building. The Library, the old Boarding Houses and other more minor improvements have occurred as well. These new and updated facilities have enabled Knox to grow and take on more and more students each year.

Preparatory School - There have also been many projects at the Knox Grammar Preparatory Campus, including the development of the K-2 Centre, the returning of Ewan Boarding House to the Prep School in 2010 (which freed up the space in the existing buildings) and minor changes, such as re-landscaping the entrances and play areas.
